In November, the city of Rio de Janeiro celebrates 33 years of Reforestation Effort, an environmental recovery program internationally recognized by entities such as the United Nations – UN and by awards such as the ‘Model Project Award” of the Society for Ecological Restoration.
The program, coordinated by the Rio de Janeiro City Environment Secretariat (SMAC), employs residents of communities near reforested areas as labor. The seedlings for replanting are kept in five nurseries with annual production capacity of over 1 million seedlings of native forest species, from trees to cactus, bromeliads and orchids.
The nurseries can be visited by prior appointment by email.
